A vertical mixer will grind it pretty fine, but they are not all that timely about it. Square bales or pre-chopped rounds process a lot quicker. It would take 15-20 minutes for our vertical mixer to process a round fescue bale just down to where it would run through the gate.
As far as the mixing and unloading. The hay is pretty small after going through the screen. I also only put 4-5 bales in a mixer full. You have to have it no more than 25% of the ration or it will bridge in the mixer. It makes a real good feed for any cattle. I even use some in larger cattle rations when the corn gets old.

You say grinder/mixer. Hay by itself will bridge unless it is fine. I always fed grain into the machine along with the hay and let it mix.
